By installing a replacement clutch many "things" change in the
vehicle. The clutch fork/slave cylinder or cable are now in a different
position. The Release bearing is now operating in a different position. Not to
mention the mounts and linkages that have all been moved. Chatter can be caused
by many different problems, we suggest some of those problems here, if you have
found one problem don't stop reading remember "Murphy" lives in your
clutch:
Flywheel:
 | Was it machined by grinding with a stone? |
 | If the flywheel wasn't machined Is it glazed or warped? |
Pilot Bearing:
 | Is the pilot bearing worn or missing? |
Clutch Disc:
 | Bent clutch disc due to hanging the transmission on the clutch disc while
installing. A replacement disc should always be put on the input shaft and
spun to make sure it runs true. This ensures that there is no problem to
begin with. |
Release or Throw-out bearing:
 | Is the release bearing binding on the quill? Look for evidence of the
bearing binding such as gouges or heavy wear on the quill. |
 | Is the release bearing seizing? Does it spin freely? Hold the bearing
between both hands, press and turn the bearing. Does the bearing rotate
smoothly? |
Contamination:
 | Is there oil in the bell housing, on the clutch, or on the flywheel? |
 | Was there too much gear lube used when installing the clutch and now the
lube is on the facings? |
Drive train Supports:
 | Is there a misalignment between the bell housing and the engine or
transmission? |
 | Are the transmission mounts worn or broken? |
 | Are the motor mounts worn or broken? |
Miscellaneous:
 | Worn Universal of CV joints. |
 | Worn Linkages. |
 | Binding Cable, a binding clutch cable can not be easily diagnosed with out
the load of the clutch. In it's free state the cable may seem to be
perfectly great. Sometimes with a binding cable the previous clutch had a
"stiff pedal". |
 | Master or slave cylinder plunger dragging. |
 | Master or slave cylinder plunger binding. |
 | EFI or Ignition system problems. Usually this will give evidence before
the replacement clutch is installed. However a torn air intake hose can
cause chatter problems. |
 | Burrs or rust in the input shaft, causing the disc to hang up. This is
another reason to try the replace clutch disc on the input shaft. It should
run freely and smoothly on the splines. |
 | Was the clutch cover bolted down evenly? |
